WHAT IS GYNECOMASTIA

The term “gynecomastia” refers to male subjects to the enlarging – not due to cancer – of the breast tissue. It can affect both breasts or occur asymmetrically. It can be associated with pain.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF GYNECOMASTIA?

Underlying this phenomenon is often an high-calorie diet with too much fat, which leads to overweight and obesity. Gynecomastia is a condition that can be a source of anxieties and insecurities: breasts too obvious in fact question the masculinity and men’s health.

PRE-SURGERY PHASE: WHAT TO DO BEFORE SURGERY?

Before surgery you need to make breast ultrasound to rule out other diseases and, as appropriate, one endocrinological studies.

HOW IS THE SURGERY?

In the case of breasts with excess skin is practised a more or less wide periareolar incision with the foresight to leave a glandular shield behind the areola to have a balanced aesthetic result. If necessary it can be associated with local liposuction to regularize the profile.
The operating risks are minimal if the surgery is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon.

WHAT TYPE OF ANESTHESIA IS PRACTICED?

It is usually performed under local anaesthesia, in some cases, it is required general anaesthesia. Often it is practiced in day-surgery and it does not need to spend the night in the hospital. The recovery is fairly quick and the results last over time unless significant changes in body weight.

POST SURGERY: WHAT TO DO AFTER SURGERY?

The patient will have to wear for 2 weeks an elastic band in correspondence with the operated area. As mentioned above the recovery time from the operation is quick. The postoperative course usually involves two dressings. It takes a few days of convalescence that will be appropriately indicated by the doctor. If your work is physically quite challenging, the time for a complete recovery could reach 7 or 10 days. Physical activity should be suspended for about one month and most of all intensive disciplines like CrossFit.
